We refer to "regular expression" in three places:

18.686 table:operator
18.709 table:search-criteria-must-apply-to-whole-cell
18.745 table:use-regular-expressions

I agree with Alex that we need to define the syntax used, hopefully by reference to one of the existing specifications.

I'd recommend we reference Unicode Regular Expressions, Level 1 (http://www.unicode.org/reports/tr18/) since it is not clear how the older POSIX regex syntaxes apply to Unicode text.
