"Because repositories MAY automatically create new Document Versions on a user's behalf, the Location returned may not match the URL of the PUT request."

In this case, the server should reject the PUT request. PUT clearly asks the server to update the document at the RequestURI. If this is not possible, then PUT is the wrong method choice.
