Best practices regarding DITA index entries, synonyms, and translation

Can anyone advise me about best practices regarding DITA index entries, synonyms, and translation? I’ve been asked whether having index entries for common synonyms in English presents problems for translation and translation management systems when comparable synonyms or phrases do not exist in the target language.
