probably says more about IRC than the problem...

I suppose your method is as good as any, if works

as you say, the whole setup is sufficiently horrible that its not
worth trying to do any one bit in a `proper' way. If I put my mind to
it, I suspect I could suggest ways to solve this particular problem,
but then if I had that time I should use it on jadetex.dtx......
