DOCBOOK-APPS: Screen element display

Screen element documentation http://www.docbook.org/tdg/html/screen.html
states that this "element is displayed "verbatim"; whitespace and
linebreaks within this element are significant." but I don't find this
to be true using 1.29 release of html Docbook XSL sheets.

How can this be achieved, i.e be able to preserve whitespaces and
linebreaks?
