I had to add pdf to the "preferred-mediaobject-extensions" in the driver
file like:

(define preferred-mediaobject-extensions
  (list "jpeg" "jpg" "png" "avi" "mpg" "mpeg" "pdf"))

Now inclusion of the pdf graphic works (incl. scaling).
