DOCBOOK-APPS: Problem

Hi Folks
I've got a problem:
I wrote some sgml-documents with docbook in xemacs and now I want to 
compile them. The commands db2dvi, db2ps, db2html work without any 
troubles but the command db2pdf always displays the error:

(Fatal format file error; I'm stymied)

The command line in my console looks like that:

sgml/pdf> db2pdf howto.sgml
tex output file name is howto.tex
tex file name is howto.tex
pdf file name is howto.pdf
This is pdfTeX, Version 3.14159-13d (Web2C 7.3.1)

my xemacs is version 21.1 (patch 12)
my docbook is  version 3.1

what's the matter ???
