FYI, -sPAPERSIZE=a4 for gs works too, so you can say

dvipdf -sPAPERSIZE=a4 myfile.dvi

(One reason I'm doing things this way is that I have images created in dia, 
which can be called to export to .eps from the command line, and hence can 
be incorporated into my Makefile).
