Question about article header/footer

Hi,

I am using Docbook 4.2 XML to write an article. My document
is one column, but the header and footer is in two column
format.

I could not yet figure out how to change this.
(Nor by the way how to influence *what* is put on the top/bottom
of each page).

Any hints very welcome.
