as my last post admitted, i just had a total brain glitch earlier and
got confused about what i was talking about.  not the first time, sorry
about that.

however, it seems that that online reference is not complete.
for example, while the column.count.* parameters are listed,
the corresponding column.gap.* are not.  just an observation,
there may be others.
