Profiling with preserved numbering

Hello *,

just to make my former post "Setting chapter numbers, ..." a little bit
clearer (I hope).

I'm interested if there is a mechanism pretty much like profiling, but with
the additional feature of preserving the numbering of titles, section,
figures, tables and so on.

If there isn't such a mechanism, can you suggest an alternative solution?
