I am answering myself :-)

I got it by date too. Though ".//" seems like two steps deep inside tag 
structure (I really don't have idea yet), by removing ".//" in my 
pubdate worked fine. It looks like this now:

      <xsl:apply-templates>
         <xsl:sort select=".//surname"/>
         <xsl:sort select="pubdate"/>
       </xsl:apply-templates>
