I am using 1.67.2 and PNG images with no problem as follows :
<!ENTITY fig1 SYSTEM "Alt.Splicing_Fig1.png" NDATA PNG>
<mediaobject id="figure1" xreflabel="Figure 1">
<imageobject>
<imagedata entityref="fig1" width="60%" align="center"/>
</imageobject>
&fig1legend;
</mediaobject>
Both HTML and PDF output are fine. Perhaps you could see if this
format will work in your situation.
