Slowly I was getting this impression my self.

After playing with xmlroff and finding it not to work at all for me I
almost gave up hope on finding a free (as in speech) package for
transforming DocBook to PDF.

That is, until I discovered dblatex which provides everything I need
and more - it's faster too for PDF generation than the usual XML -> FO
-> PDF route.
