You want this attribute in the sidebar.properties attribute set 
to permit breaking:

 <xsl:attribute name="keep-together.within-column" 
select="'auto'"/>

The sidebar.properties attribute-set uses the 
formal.object.properties attribute set,
which has a keep-together.within-column="always".

The sidebar element should be enhanced to
support the dbfo keep-together processing instruction.
