Hi David,

You will have to customize the template in fo/footnote.xsl 
(and html/footnote.xsl) that starts with:

 

<xsl:template match="footnote" 
mode="footnote.number">

That is where the footnote symbol is created for both 
table and non-table locations.

  enter those into this param statement because it only allows sets of single 
  characters.  Any other idea as to how I can use my
