I think it's a bit more than a workaround, it's the best way to avoid 
multiple copies of bibliographic data when you refer to the same 
reference in different articles.  See Bob's book p.226 - <biblioref 
linkend="STAYTON05"/> (p.226), or sometime, maybe, <biblioref 
linkend="STAYTON05" start="226" units="pages"/>
