I didn't know that expression to add this to my XSL-Stylesheet. I did. But FOP does not know this EXSLT-Function:

WARNUNG: javax.xml.transform.TransformerException: 
        Timestamp processing requires an XSLT processor with support
        for the EXSLT node-set() function.

Generating first a FO-Output with xsltproc and then using FOP to convert to PDF or RTF, the date is displayed in Output. It seems that the XSLT processor which comes with FOP does not support the EXSLT functions.

And do you have xmlns:date="http://exslt.org/dates-and-times" namespace
declaration attached to your xsl:stylesheet element?
