Probably the compiler cannot handle paths that start above the base
document.
Every image path starts with a ..\..\
Is there a know issue with that?

I got something wrong.
The paths are relative! But the chm compiler does not embed the images.
I also fiddled with
<xsl:param name="htmlhelp.enumerate.images" select="1"></xsl:param>
Without success.
Is this a compiler issue? As I said the index.html works correct in the
browser.

Try fiddling with keep.relative.image.uris (I think that's the right
parameter)
