internal linking

I'm currently using

see <xref linkend="modes.ex1" endterm="modes.ex1.s"/></para>


<example xml:id="modes.ex">
   <title></title>
   <titleabbrev xml:id=""></titleabbrev>
   <programlisting>
..

to get a connection from body text to an example.

Is it possible to *just* get the number, so that
the link shows in html as

see example 2.1  ....

or whatever the number is?
