Hi,
I don't think the variable is empty.  How are you using the variable?  If you say 
<xsl:value-of select="$nbthinsp"/>, then the result will be empty because xsl:value-of 
returns a *string* value.  If instead you say <xsl:copy-of> then it should work for 
you.
