Stanza is the more general term?

Good suggestion! At this rate, I wonder if we should have the specific
poem element, or have a more general structure that would work for
poetry, dialogue, songs, etc. and subclassed via a type attribute?

Doubtful. I'd suggest either do it properly or leave it so vague as
not to matter, and let users
mark it up using attributes?

This is a tighter version of play class of markup.
And it omits the persona and stage directions?
