I did a review of Doug Kaye's book about a year ago for WebServices.Org (http://www.webservices.org/index.php/ws/content/view/full/39623) and came away with some of the same conclusions.
The book is an excellent intro to SOA. Kaye is indeed a master at making the concepts easy to understand without treating the reader like a dummy. In the past year, since that review, adoption of ebMS has advanced significantly worldwide, which addresses many of the security factors Kaye raises.
