[ebxml-dev] Re: Standards Convergence [was: ebXML is academic driven?]

As someone who plays the role of an Architect in the RosettaNet's Architecture Office and who has spoken to RosettaNet representatives that attended the mentioned forum in Malaysia, I'd like to share some background on this topic that may help clear up any confusion.

RosettaNet has always taken the approach of a standards integrator by leveraging existing standards and driving convergence with complementary efforts. To drive convergence, RosettaNet maintains a number of collaborative relationships with standards bodies and trade organizations.
 
RosettaNet has embraced ebXML specifications, both in its standards and internally. In March 2004, RosettaNet began publishing XML Schema-based PIPs® that specified ebXML BPSS, and ebXML Registry has been used internally to support the maintenance of XML Schemas and other artifacts. RosettaNet's Interoperability program also produced provisioning profile guidelines that leveraged elements of ebXML CPPA.

In addition, the active RosettaNet Multiple Messaging Services program focuses on allowing alternatives to RNIF as the required TRP standard for RosettaNet PIP exchanges, including derivatives of ebXML ebMS and WS-I Basic Profile. The goal is to allow significant alignment at the messaging layer and support for users of these messaging approaches.

It is worth noting that these convergence efforts are driven both by technical integration value and by member support. Because RosettaNet members have demonstrated demand for both ebXML and WS-I convergence, RosettaNet is developing support for both as viable choices to meet the unique needs of its user community, which spans multiple industries and geographies.   

RosettaNet will keep monitoring both ebXML and Web Services and other efforts in order to converge and to provide implementation solutions that will be beneficial for its membership and beyond.
