RE: Why we need datum information

I know I am preaching to the choir, but if anyone ever asks why OASIS 
standards specify a datum when using lat/long coordinates, attached is an 
example (and short) explanation. Written by Roger Lott (geodesy geek 
extraordinaire and current chairperson of The International 
Association of Oil & Gas producers (OGP)).
