Several OASIS standards have their own unique logos. It's a great way to build support for and recognition of your brand, especially in the case of EDXL, where you have a suite of standards. A few questions you may want to ask before you go too far:
Should the logo be able to incorporate the names of the standards within the EDXL family--EDXL-DE, EXDL-SiteRep? If so, you want to try out the logotype using all those options to be sure it's flexible enough.
How would the EDXL logo relate to the existing CAP logo?

Do you want just a logotype or would you also find value in a logo that includes a graphic? A graphic is good if you see a use case for an icon.
If you want a logo that could be used for badging, e.g. "We Support EDXL", you should keep that in mind when you choose a design.
I don't have any experience with the 99designs.com contest, but it looks like it might produce a cool range of options.
