If that is the case then we really need to be careful about standard versions -
and in fact should be considering that updates to the standard are 1.x and not
2.x as currently suggested.

A number of the proposals under discussion have talked about changing structures
in a non-compatible manner.

I also guess you could just send in a series of requests with different major
and minor version numbers and see which ones are returned with an error to
figure out the version number a server supports.
