I want to pose another issue for this evening's call -- probably not for
decision but for initial discussion.

I know that I am not alone in thinking that we have been a less than
effective board of directors for Legal XML.  That has been one of my
motivations to get our organization placed securely within the OASIS
structure.  I have said as much in my postings supporting the acceptance
of the OASIS offer.

That being the case, I think it unwise to carry our same structure
forward from the Legal XML Board of Directors into the OASIS member
section steering committee.  It seems obvious to me that we don't need
the same officer structure -- we have no continuing need for a secretary
and treasurer, for instance.  OASIS staff will perform those roles.

I would ask that we think clearly about what leadership structure we do
need.  I, for one, favor a flat structure that focuses us on XML
standards development and substantive matters rather than administrative
matters.

Finally, I would like to see Dan Greenwood have stronger leadership role
and position in the steering committee.  In my eyes he has proved his
abilities during the many months of the OASIS negotiations.  He stays
focused on what needs to get accomplished.  He is very familiar with the
OASIS personnel and its structures and processes.  And he gets results.
We need to take full advantage of his skills to get us back focused on
what we came to Legal XML to do -- to develop workable, effective XML
specifications for the legal and justice communities.

Finally, I hope that we can agree on a process to bring these issues to
closure quickly.  We need to begin functioning effectively as the new
steering committee.

Thank you all for rearranging your calendars so that I can be part of
the meeting this evening.
