Jamie -- We often hold our meetings in courthouses, at no cost. The
host often asks if her or his technical staff can sit in on our meetings
so that they can benefit from our presence. I have consistently allowed
such visitors, as observers, with the provision that they may not
participate in the discussion -- they may not contribute anything -- in
effect they must sit there with their mouths shut. OASIS staff have
approved that practice in the past. I cannot perceive any risk to OASIS
in this practice. The observer could not possibly assert any interest
in the outcome of the meeting -- they played no role in it; they
contributed nothing. OASIS is an open organization; I would find it
very hard to say to one of my professional colleagues that an open
organization does not allow anyone to observe its proceedings.
