UIMA stands for Unstructured Information
Management Architecture. The acronym UIMA is the name used to refer to
a project that started at IBM (http://www.ibm.com/research/uima)
focused on creating a common framework for supporting the creation, composition
and deployment of text and multi-modal analytics. These “analytics” are
the fundamental building blocks used for developing applications that automatically
discover the latent semantics in unstructured information (e.g., natural
language documents, emails, chat, speech, video etc).  IBM has developed
and contributed a Java-based framework implementation into the open-source
community (http://uima-framework.sourceforge.net/
). This initial implementation addresses a host of interoperability and
deployment requirements and exercises  many architecture concepts.
It is not,  however a general platform-independent specification.

The scope of work of the TC is to generalize
from the published UIMA Java Framework implementation and produce a platform-independent
specification in support of the interoperability, discovery and composition
of analytics across modalities, domain models, frameworks and platforms.

Specifically, the TC is to consider
an initial draft contributed by IBM in the Research Report based on the
UIMA project entitled "Towards an Interoperability

Standard for Text and Multi-Modal Analytics".
This report should be used as a straw man to scope, develop, rationalize
a promote a formal UIMA specification.
