Re: 17 Conformance in WD31

Section 17.1 is the conformance for the Server and contains two sections: 17.1.1 for the Lobby and 17.1.2 for Contracts.

The way it is written in WD31 it shows that the Bindings and Encodings requirements only within the Lobby.  Shouldn't the Bindings and Encodings sections be 17.1.3 and 17.1.4 so that they refer to the overall Server itself, and not only to the Lobby?  Note:
the part of Bindings and Encodings referring specifically to the Lobby probably should stay within the Lobby section, such as "Any bindings used by the implementation MUST be listed in the Bindings section of the Server’s Lobby Object."  Similarly for encodings
 within Lobby.

Contrast the Server to how Binding and Encoding are handled for the Client in 17.2.  Here you can see Binding and Encoding are sections 17.2.1 and 17.2.2 and therefore conditions for the overall client.

Another minor question: should the sections be labelled Binding and Encoding (as noted in the Client) or Bindings and Encodings (as noted in the Server)?

XML uses traditional double quotes, not begin and end double quotes.

The quotes are automatically modified by word as a function of the Spell-Check function-which means they can be turned off by style (style includes language
options as well as formatting) Normally if you are using the example style, they are disabled.

I’ve seen it in some places.  Can I get a ruling Toby, on whether smart quotes should/should not be in the XML?  It appears from what I’ve seen that prose
quotes are “smart”, and XML quotes are mixed – some are smart (mostly ones that have been edited recently), and some are not (mostly ones that are heldover from 1.0).

I have a WD32 with all the fixes except smart quotes ready to ship out, and can produce a WD32 with the smart quote fix, just let me know.  WD31 has most
of the changes, so the difference to WD32 should be small enough that people could consume it on the fly in the call tomorrow if need be.

Thanks

Craig

Hi Craig,

I was just looking in XML snippets the tagspace chapter, it contains two types of quotes:

but also in the versioning XML snippet I see the "Word"-ified quotes:

it is really nitpicking, I know... (I can go through the doc and create a list if needed, but maybe it is faster with the formatted search within Word?!)

I’ve fixed 5.5.1 – I noticed that when I first moved it, but forgot to go back and check that accepting changes had fixed it, sorry!

I searched through a few dozen pages in the middle, and I found:

·

quotes in the XML are simple text quotes

·

quotes in the prose are Word-style “down-quote/up-quote”

·

When the prose is specifically including some XML, it has un-styled quotes

This seems to be consistent, at least in the sections I checked.  Is that a problem?  Can you point to an example?

I have made these changes to a WD32 doc, which I can send out once we sort this out.  It shouldn’t be a problem for people since the changes will be very minor from WD31.

Thanks,

Craig

Hi Craig,

cool stuff! I only have two formatting comments:

- 5.1.1 is twice in the text (one for tagspace, same for versioning)

- there are a lot of Word formatted quote characters mixed-in with the standard quotes, can this easily be cleaned?

Submitter's message

I have posted WD31 which includes the changes from last weeks' discussion. I am hopeful that this one may be able to go out for public review.

Thanks,

Craig
