Mathematical variables are typically written in italics. This would
explain why they are in that way in the formulas and for consistency
also in the running text.

 In the syntax, the type is in italics so I guess to distinguish the
variables from the type, roman style is used for the variables. 

It would make more sense to me to use italic variables everywhere.
