Just came across this article reporting comments from Federal Trade Commission Chairwoman Edith Ramirez about privacy and the IoT which starts: 

"Principles such as privacy by design should be adapted to the emerging world of Internet-connected appliances and other devices

There is also a link to a series of videos from an FTC workshop that includes her speech.
