A word question

I have been doing a lot of moving text around within the RA.

Unfortunately, word has managed to screw up once again. If I move a  
cross reference to section 3.5.2 (say) so that it is now section 3.2.3  
the text of the reference becomes Section 1.1.1. However, if you click  
on it, you end up at the right place: section 3.2.3.

Also the insert cross reference dialog shows a lot of sections labeled  
1.1.1

I have tried 'update field' but that does not fix the problem

Anyone have any bright ideas about how to fix this?
