fundamental model

I was reading through the PR2 draft discussion of the ecosystem and  
was still feeling like we were missing something that fundamentally  
ties our discussions to what the reader is likely looking for.  The  
following (or possibly attached) figure shows a model that I think  
starts to capture that missing link.
