Metadata Repository - A Key Enabling Technology of SOA
Dr. Chris Harding of The Open Group published an article titled "Discovery: the Key to Success with SOA" in the current Open Group newsletter. His article highlights the need for a metadata registry/repository as an enabling technology for a service oriented architecture.

In the article, he cites Yefim Natis, an executive Gartner analyst, who states, "... no long-term enterprise SOA initiative can succeed without an integrated and searchable repository or registry." Dr. Harding's article is available at the following URL --

The article also mentions the UDEF as a possible indexing mechanism for metadata discovery across repositories. If you want to learn more about the UDEF, see http://www.opengroup.org/udef/ and http://www.opengroup.org/udefinfo/defs.htm and http://www.opengroup.org/udefinfo/demo0511/demos.htm and http://colab.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?SICoPPublicMeeting_2005_11_10 .

The last two links provide the videos and most recent UDEF presentation demonstrating an example use case where the UDEF could support a disaster response team.
