New issue : Need MakeConnection example

Title: Need MakeConnection example

Description: Reading section 3.7 can be pretty confusing without the
benefit of having been involved in all the conversations leading up to
our adding this feature.  It would be most helpful to have an
illustrative example of the MakeConnection interactions in the spec,
either up near the other example in 2.4, or down in 3.7 itself.

Justification: see description.

Target: core

Proposal: Add a simple example demonstrating how MakeConnection can be
used to the specification.
