I would agree with the need to separately visit the backward compatibility question. I would note the general approach we are taking of developing new things as if they were independent and deferring any decision about merging those things with existing parts of the spec until it is determined that a particular feature should be added to the spec. With regard to the copyPortlet proposal, it clearly can be an extension of the clonePortlet operation with a new (likely nullable) parameter, but it is too early to decide we want to do that. Another approach, would be to add the additional argument to the clone() method and force implementations to check the producer spec version before making the call. The advantage is that we wouldn't have multiple methods which have similar functionality. This seems like a larger question of general approach regarding spec versions and backward compatibility that we probably should discuss.
