getResource and requiresRewriting

Does the wsrp-requiresRewrite token in a consumer rewriteURL/template 
have any meaning if the in-protocol resource retrieval method is used?  
I.e. does it act as the default value if there is no 
mimeResponse.requiresRewriting value or is it always ignored?
