Why must there be a third way? The Web is a phenomenal success, and it's clear that small steps can make it better. I'd rather work on these small steps than any reinvention of the Web.
And for the record, I think that tying RDF to the Semantic Web is wrong and dangerous to both technologies. To my thinking and usage, RDF is part of the small steps that can help improve the current Web. That's all. I do not see it as inevitabely tied to reinvention of the Web.
Perhaps this is why I have been able to glean actual practical use from RDF. Nice to see that someone like John Cowan has as well.
And aside to Mike Champion: I thin the RSS 1.0 folks would dispute that RSS 0.9 is in more widespread use. I don't think it's a useful argument to start.
