This article seems to be relevant to the discussion of file metadata and extensions. http://www.arstechnica.com/reviews/01q3/metadata/metadata-1.html And for the record, the _worst_ thing about the Windows installation at the local college where I teach (IMHO) is the default of "hide file extensions for known types," which forces students to distinguish files by their icons, or to turn off the option every time they sign in.
