why is it unacceptable? It's (one of the) the terminologies the 
namespace spec uses, for example in section 2.1 basic concepts:
...For a name N in a namespace .....

since a namespace is (presumably) a space (set) of names, it makes more 
sense to talk of names being in the namespace than bound to it.
certainly neither the namespace spec nor xpath ever phrase thigs in that 
way. The prefix on the other hand isn't in the namespace but just 
associated (bound) to it in each instance document.
