I don't think it was even meant as a linguistic statement. It is part of 
the introductory blahblah, and the success and efficiency of ANTLR 
doesn't depend on whether this sentence is true. More generally, using 
abstract syntax trees for modeling certain relationships has little to 
do with what human brains do or not do -- it's just efficient for some 
purposes and some kinds of data.

To try to build a story based on this fragment is a bold move, let's say.
