The current version of xml.edit.xml has potential in a smart phone, in that it allows you to choose any node as the root (context) for the display by drilling down. Then to easily jump back to the real root node.

The display consists of a current root at top left, its children underneath it, and the tree-view of the currently selected child on the right. It should be possible to hide the left hand side of the display to only work on the current child tree.

The reposition is done by clicking the green square with the caret character to the left of each child. There is bread-crumb/path display to get back at the top.

Also, our generated XForms forms project now allows you drill down to any depth in the tree, presenting a user-friendly form at each level. It does need more work to be useful, but here is one example.

There is a generic way to turn a regular XML 'data' file into a tabular display, a demo of that is online here:

I think that this has can be improved to make it a more spreadsheet like experience with multiple sheets as necessary.

So, I guess I disagree with Liam, and think that a tree is a very natural way to present 'data' and work with it in a very generic manner (This thought became a bit of an obsession frankly). That its XML is almost incidental. Tables are Trees, Trees are Graphs.

Most of these demos will work in all browsers except IE I think.

The tree view has a lot of concerns against it, one of them is that it's hard to use in mobile devices.
