Well, it has its role.  A client of mine has a legacy newspaper 
sports score format with plenty of control characters (thankfully not 
NUL) and so being able to write XSLT with XML 1.1 was critical to the 
simplicity of that project in that there was no post-processing of 
the output of the stylesheet.
