I realize this is the lazy way to do this, but do you have Eric Bischoff's
Jade Wrapper (script name is jw)? If so, the conversion is just

      docbook2rtf <filename>

  Can some kind soul point me to a tutorial, like [1], for using the
  DSSSL stylesheets to generate RTF?

  I'm using SuSE 8 with its openjade package and the current version of
  the stylesheets.
