My impression is that you would better split the definition of
"easy-datatype-assignable pattern" and your algorithm to detect (a
subset of) that. Since one may wish to use a weaker (but easier)
algorithm, or to use a stronger (but complex) algorithm.


[Informal definition of "easy datatype assignment"]

A pattern P is said to have "easy datatype assignment" if and only if
all datatypes of any valid document X can be decided without lookahead.
